Pedagogic Corpora for Content & Language Integrated Learning
BACKBONE is a European project funded by the Lifelong Learning Programme, Key Activity : Languages (duration: 01/2009-02/2011). The project involves eight partners from seven European countries:
BACKBONE developed web-based pedagogic corporaof video-recorded spoken interviews with native speakers of English, French, German, Polish, Spanish and Turkish as well as non-native speakers of English as a Lingua Franca.
Interview topics range from culture and region to education and health, business and technology. Interview transcripts are pedagogically annotated with regard to thematic, grammatical and lexical properties relevant for language learning and teaching.
To facilitate pedagogic exploitation in blended learning scenarios, enrichment materials are integrated.
The annotated and enriched corpora are available free of charge and can be accessed in a variety of pedagogically motivated search modes via the BACKBONE online search interface.
Pedagogic piloting is carried out in blended learning courses in CLIL settings in secondary, higher and vocational education. E-learning activities are based on Moodle.
Corpus Creation Tools
The BACKBONE corpus creation tools support orthographic transcription, collaborative annotation and pedagogic enrichment. The Transcriptor tutorial is here and the Annotator tutorial is here.
Pedagogic enrichment includes ready-made language learning modules created with Telos Language Partner as well as instructions for communicative and exploratory tasks in Moodle.
